Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Goal 5 aims to achieve gender equality by ending discrimination and violence against women and girls and ensuring full participation and equal opportunities for women in leadership at all levels of political and economic decision-making.

London Met champions gender equality through inclusive policies, support networks, and initiatives across campus.

This page highlights London Met's ongoing initiatives and key achievements from the 2024/25 academic year, demonstrating efforts to advance SDG 5.

Health, wellbeing and support

Supporting Equal Access to Education and Opportunity

Women make up the majority of our student population, reflecting our long-standing commitment to widening participation and creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds. Through our teaching, support services and inclusive practices, we work to ensure that all students can fulfil their potential.

Advancing Women's Leadership

During 2024/25, London Met participated in the Women in Higher Education Network (WHEN), supporting sector-wide efforts to advance gender equality and increase the representation of women in leadership across higher education.

We also celebrate the achievements and contributions of women through initiatives such as the 2025 Wall of Women, which highlights inspiring role models from across our university community and beyond.

Creating an Inclusive Community

Our staff networks provide opportunities for colleagues to connect, share experiences and contribute to a more inclusive workplace. These include networks supporting women and LGBTQ+ colleagues, helping to foster a culture of belonging, collaboration and mutual support.

Embedding Equality in Our Institution

Our commitment to gender equality is supported through institutional frameworks including our Equality and Diversity Policy, family-friendly policies such as maternity and paternity leave, and our participation in the Athena Swan Charter, which helps universities advance gender equality in higher education and research.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 targets agreed upon by all UN Member States in 2015. Their purpose is to create a better and more sustainable future for everyone by 2030. They address major global issues such as poverty, inequality, climate action, and education, requiring all countries to work together to achieve these ambitious targets.
