Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

Goal 7 calls for ensuring universal access to modern energy services, improving energy efficiency, and increasing the share of renewable energy. It calls for countries to promote clean energy research, investment in resource-efficient solutions, and sustainable energy infrastructure.

Through sustainable infrastructure upgrades and renewable energy projects, London Met is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting clean energy.

This page highlights London Met's ongoing initiatives and key achievements from the 2024/25 academic year, demonstrating efforts to advance SDG 7.

Reducing Energy Use and Carbon Emissions

We continue to invest in measures that improve energy efficiency across our estate and reduce the environmental impact of our operations. During 2024/25, London Met reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions by 16% compared with the previous year, equivalent to approximately 485 tonnes of CO₂e. This reflects our ongoing commitment to reducing energy consumption and improving environmental performance across our campuses.

Delivering Our Net Zero Ambition

Our Estates Strategy sets out a long-term vision for a sustainable, efficient and resilient estate that supports the university's educational mission while reducing its environmental impact. One of the strategy's key objectives is to decarbonise the estate through targeted investment and infrastructure improvements.

Central to this approach is our Carbon and environmental management plan, which commits the University to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030. The plan includes improvements to lighting, controls, metering and building efficiency, the expansion of renewable energy generation, and the future replacement of fossil-fuel heating infrastructure with low-carbon alternatives.

Generating Renewable Energy

London Met continues to increase the use of clean energy across its estate. Solar panels installed on the Science Centre generate renewable electricity, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and supporting progress towards our net zero ambitions. The University's carbon and environmental management plan also includes a commitment to increase on-site renewable energy generation over time.

Sharing Knowledge on Clean Energy

As a civic university, we promote discussion and knowledge exchange on energy and sustainability challenges through events that are open to students, professionals and members of the public. During 2024/25, our public lecture programme included the Implications for Existing Housing Stock of Policy on Zero Carbon Targets session, which explored the challenges and opportunities associated with improving energy performance and reducing emissions from existing buildings. This work helps support wider understanding of the transition to a low-carbon built environment.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 targets agreed upon by all UN Member States in 2015. Their purpose is to create a better and more sustainable future for everyone by 2030. They address major global issues such as poverty, inequality, climate action, and education, requiring all countries to work together to achieve these ambitious targets.
