Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

Goal 8 emphasises sustained economic growth and high productivity to create well-paid, quality jobs and improve resource efficiency. It calls for full employment, decent work for all, eradication of forced labour and child labor, and promotion of labour rights and safe working conditions.

London Met values fair working conditions, labour rights, and equal opportunities, ensuring a supportive and inclusive environment for all staff and students.

This page highlights London Met's ongoing initiatives and key achievements from the 2024/25 academic year, demonstrating efforts to advance SDG 8.

Supporting Fair and Inclusive Employment

We are committed to fostering a workplace where all staff are treated with dignity and respect. Our policies and procedures help ensure a safe, inclusive and equitable working environment, including measures to prevent harassment, discrimination and unfair treatment. Through our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, we work to create a culture where everyone can contribute and thrive.

Supporting Staff Voice and Representation

We recognise the importance of meaningful staff engagement and collective representation. London Met works closely with recognised trade unions, enabling staff to be represented in discussions relating to employment, workplace conditions and organisational change. We also provide clear and transparent procedures that enable staff to raise concerns and resolve workplace issues fairly.

Promoting Equality in the Workplace

London Met is committed to creating an inclusive workplace where all staff have opportunities to develop and succeed. In 2024/25, the University's mean gender pay gap fell to 3.34%, our lowest recorded figure and a significant improvement from 4.39% in 2023/24 and 8.55% in 2016/17.

Our median gender pay gap was 6.17%, substantially below the higher education sector median of 11.9%. Women are represented across all pay quartiles and make up almost half of employees in the highest pay quartile, reflecting our ongoing efforts to improve representation and progression opportunities across the University.

Supporting Employment Opportunities for Students

London Met supports students to gain valuable workplace experience through MetTemps, the University's employment agency. All MetTemps appointments are paid at least the London Living Wage, helping students earn an income alongside their studies while developing skills and experience that support their future careers.

During 2024/25, the University invested approximately £1.9 million in student and casual staff employment through the scheme. The programme reflects our commitment to supporting both financial wellbeing and graduate employability.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 targets agreed upon by all UN Member States in 2015. Their purpose is to create a better and more sustainable future for everyone by 2030. They address major global issues such as poverty, inequality, climate action, and education, requiring all countries to work together to achieve these ambitious targets.
